What Causes Eating Disorders?

What elicits and sustains your eating patterns depends upon an interaction of psychological, social and cultural factors in combination with your genetics and biochemistry. Appetite disorders are caused by a combination of these factors.

There are genetic, emotional and nutritional factors that may lead you to over or under-eat. We sometimes like to shift the blame on your biochemistry where it rightly belongs, wether for bing eating disorder, bulimia or any non-specified eating disorder.

Treatment Plan

There is a spectrum of disordered eating, ranging from mild dieting to anorexia, from bingeing to binge eating disorder. So your treatment plan is personalised and tailor made.

Erratic eating, fasting and purging can lead to nutritional deficiencies that are associated with both physical and psychological complications. Nutritional deficiencies can be a result of an eating disorder, but also a contributing factor trigger to them. Read below to learn about my approach.

Functional Medicine Approach

Disordered eating comes from a complex interplay between our lifestyle choices, our history and more importantly, our individual biochemistry. Many treatment approaches are ineffective because they do not recognise that appetite disturbance is actually a deep biochemical phenomenon that cannot be resolved by effort and will power alone.

If affordable, laboratory testing is the foundation of a personalised nutritional approach and will help tailor a treatment plan designed for your unique biochemistry. Other lifestyle interventions are also introduced.

It is important to add that, as well as appetite being a problem in and of itself, it's important to discover whether there is a co-occurring disorder reinforcing unhealthy eating patterns and to receive concurrent treatment for co-existing mental conditions.

CBT-E

CBT-E addresses issues in your present life as opposed to looking at root causes in early family dynamics. You may distract yourself from feelings, by bingeing, purging or other disordered eating behaviours. Similarly how you act affects your thoughts and feelings.

The treatment is a one-to-one talking type of treatment that primarily focuses on what is keeping the eating problem going. It is therefore mainly concerned with the present and future. It addresses the origins of the problem as needed.
